Discussion Sections AA/AB/AC Guidelines
Discussion Sections: 123 AA, 123 AB, 123 AC and JSIS 123 AA
Meeting Room: SMI 415C
TA: Ronnie Thibault
Office Hours: I do not plan to schedule specific office hours; however, I am happy to schedule individual appointments. If would like to meet for any reason, whether it is to discuss your research, share your thoughts about what we are learning in the course or discuss struggles you may encounter feel free to catch me after class or send an email and we will find a time that works best.
Communication and Discussion Section Group Canvas Page: I created a group canvas space specifically for our discussion section groups that you can access through the general course canvas site. You should have received an invitation to that page already if you have not please see me during class. This is where I will make announcements about our discussion sections and post important information and updates. You will need to regularly monitor the section site and set your personal settings to ‘subscribe to updates’ so you will receive email notifications. I created a discussion post where you can interact with each other about course topics, post general questions or add interesting content that is relevant to the class. I will check the discussion sections regularly and respond to questions within 24 hours.
Discussion Section Structure: It is my goal that these discussion sections will enhance your understanding of the materials addressed in the primary lectures, provide you an opportunity to ask questions regarding course assignments, tests, and quizzes, and open a space for in-depth discussions about the assigned readings and course curriculum. This section will be highly interactive and we will engage the course materials through various in-class activities, small group discussions, and interactive workshops. This time will also offer multiple opportunities to enhance your research and writing skills and increase your fluency with the UW Libraries database. This is your time and space to develop your critical thinking and learning skills and I will structure our session formats based on the information you provide on the course goals survey provided in our first section meeting. You can also access a digital version of the survey here: Student Survey Link
This discussion section follows Section Guidelines and Policies:guidelines and policies outlined in the course syllabus and during the first class lecture.
Small Group Discussions and Activities: Most sessions will include small group discussions, activities or projects related to the course readings and materials. Hearing from fellow classmates is an excellent way to learn new perspectives and different approaches to the course materials. It is critical that you come to our sessions prepared to discuss the readings or critical points you have taken away from the lecture portion of the class.
There will be no cell phone use during our meeting times. If you have a valid reason to monitor your cell phone during the 50-minute section please see me and we can make arrangements. Laptops and tablets are allowed for note-taking and in-class exercises only. Surfing social media or online shopping sites Technology: is not only distracting to you but also those around you and you will lose participation points for these activities.
My role as your TA: It is my role to facilitate your learning and help you take as much away from this course as possible. Please feel free to contact me with questions, ideas or problems that arise as the course moves forward. Remember, if you feel you are struggling with a concept or assignment there is a good chance some of your fellow students are having a similar experience and asking questions in class or through the discussion site is a fantastic way to collectively problem solve.
